Microscopic Vasectomy Reversal

Microscopic vasectomy reversal is your best chance at achieving pregnancy once you have had a vasectomy.  A good urologist with micro surgical experience and many microscopic vasectomy reversal procedures under his belt are your best bet for excellent results.  Factors like the time period between the original vasectomy and the reversal, age of the patient at the time of the reversal, quality of the original surgery (clean, smooth, incisions) and the age of your spouse at the time of the reversal will affect the pregnancy rate.

There was an anecdotal study done using one doctor’s practice where he had performed over four thousand (4010) microscopic vasectomy reversals since 1975.  Of those patients there were records on three thousand nine hundred and four (3904).  Of those researchers were able to contact seventeen hundred and thirty five (1735).  Out of that number fifteen hundred and fifty six were able to get pregnant with their partners.  This produced a total of two thousand and eleven (2011) pregnancies. While the time from the original vasectomy had a statistical effect it is interesting to note that the microscopic vasectomy reversal returned over ninety percent (93% for vasectomies older than ten years, and 98% for vasectomies newer than ten years) positive results.

The greatest impact on whether a couple got pregnant after the microscopic vasectomy reversal was not the age of the husband or the age of the vasectomy but the age of the wife.  Women under the age of 30 whose husbands had the procedure achieved pregnancy over ninety four (94.2%) of the time while those wives over forty only achieved pregnancy in slightly over sixty (61.1%) percent of the women.

I looked at a couple of individual doctor’s sites and found one doctor who advertises he has been doing microscopic vasectomy reversals for thirty years.  He even describes what he uses during the surgery.  His Zeiss operating microscope can magnify the area over forty times and he uses one of only two Zeiss Microsurgical chairs in the United States.  He uses a 10-0 nylon microsurgical sutures with a 70 micron needle and then a 9-0 nylon suture to close the outer wall at the end of the surgery.

Dr. Gatewood offers his surgery which includes the extra procedure in case of a vas blockage for seventy five hundred dollars ($7500) with financing options available.  Payment options include a deposit and balance due the day of surgery or monthly payments are available and you can also use any major credit card for a microscopic vasectomy reversal.
